A range of Fibre Channel products including Fibre Switches, Storage Routers, Fibre Hubs, Fibre-SCSI bridges, HBAs, and Fibre Storage Controllers that can be provided alongside data storage devices to form high-speed, high-availability data networks.

Advantages: Build resilient storage networks that will give maximum performance, continuous high availability access, and remove the LAN backup headache. The next step in data storage. One day everyone will have one . . .

Disadvantages: Highest level of performance and technology usually means expensive and complex. Not for the faint hearted or for those on a budget from petty cash.

Digital Audio Tape
DDS-2, DDS-3, DDS-4+
4GB upwards SCSI backup solutions. A range of internal and external drives in various capacities makes DAT an acceptable solution for lower to midrange capacity requirements at departmental level.

DAT autoloaders & libraries can be economically and conveniently implemented in SAN environments with appropriate FC/SCSI bridge.

Simplstic packages are available containing everything required to start immediate stand-alone, departmental, or branch backups in single solutions. HP's One Button Disaster Recovery on the DDS-4 is ideally suited to isolated server restoration.

Advantages: Very wide range of software & application support & availability, legacy support for older DAT formats in each new generation. Less expensive than DLT/SDLT, LTO/Ultrium, AIT.

Disadvantages: Relatively low capacity and performance in comparison to DLT/SDLT, LTO/Ultrium, AIT. Oldest of all formats with age starting to show. Not unknown for a small degree of incompatibility between rival manufacturers, usually caused by using hardware compression built into individual tape units. Notorious for deciding they can't read a tape just because they feel like it and then changing their minds later.

Digital Linear Tape
DLT-III, DLT-IV: SCSI
ARCserve for NT, ARCserve for NetWare, Dantz Retrospect software. The original fast performance & higher capacity network backup system. Tried & tested over the years, DLT provides solid and reliable technology.

Hardware-only or complete packages including everything required to start immediate backups available in single solutions.

SDLT - Super DLT Systems
Increased capacity, backward and future compatibility, and higher performance, marks the arrival of SDLT and begins a new era of DLT technology. Starting at more than 200GB and evolving to more than 2TB on a single cartridge, SDLT pushes the capacity and performance of the DLT family to new levels.

Advanced Intelligent Tape
AIT1 (35GB native capacity), AIT2 (50GB native capacity), AIT3 (1000GB native capcity) backup drives.

High performance backup at highly competitive cost.
Fast throughput with high MB/sec. transfer rates.
Standard 3.5" form-factor makes AIT drives an ideal choice for very high capacity internal server drives. Both internal & external AIT drives use a SCSI interface for high-speed access and backup. Ideal for network & server backup strategy & implementation.

Library & autoloader systems increase capacity exponentially. Compatible with all standard backup software (e.g. ARCserve for NT4/WK2/W2003//XP/ NetWare, Dantz Retrospect for NT, Win9x, and Macintosh environments).

Ultrium (LTO) Tape Systems
The Ultrium tape format is the implementation of the LTO (Linear Tape-Open) Technology. With a native capacity starting at 100GB - 200GB with 2:1 compression - for LTO1, it is optimised for high capacity and performance with exceptional reliability in either a stand-alone or an automated environment.

LTO2 raises the standard to 200Gb native (400GB compressed at 2:1 ratio).

LTO3 increases native capcity to 400GB (800GB compression at 2:1 ratio). These drives are being licensed for availability late 2004/early 2005.

LTO generation 4 is intended to raise this to 1.6TB compressed capcity.

DVD Recordable Drives
DVD recording is a maze of competitive standards. At its simplest, DVD is a high-capacity, high-performance optical disk that allows data to be read, written, and erased. It can be used to perform archiving of documents for off-line storage or to work more like a large floppy disk, allowing users to copy and delete files from it. DVDs make perfect library copies for online archives or network sharing.

Advantages: Simplified and familiar technology combined with inexpensive media costs. Most recordable DVD formats offer all of the benefits of DVD, including high capacity and compatibility with CD formats.

Disadvantages: With more standards than you can shake a stick at, DVD recording is for the next generation. By then they may have agreed on a standard that everyone can use.

DVD Jukeboxes
Versatile DVD jukeboxes with options ranging from 1 to over 64 drives and disc capacities from 20 to over 1800. Ideally suited in traditional optical implementations: near-line or online archives, in environments where online documentation is regularly changed, in document library systems, or where backup and/or distribution copies need to be made.

DVD Towers & Network Servers
NAS server technology combined with CD towers. Multiple single-disc drive units in CD towers - Ethernet & Token Ring. Go on, distribute those libraries.

Compact Disc Recorders & Rewriters
Versatile and ubiquitous solutions for all platforms. The low cost of blank CD recordable discs combined with the universal compatibility of the CD-ROM drive, make CDR probably the ideal medium to share & backup data in a simple & cost-effective fashion.

CD-RW is deal for testing projects before final archiving or CD production. Packet-writing brings an entire new dimension of simplicity to CD recording with it's simple 'floppy disk' drag and drop interface. CD-RW drives appear just as another hard drive or fixed volume on your system.

Direct Network Attached CD Servers
NAS technology combined with CD towers. Multiple single-disc drive units in CD towers - Ethernet & Token Ring.

CD Autochangers integrated into CD towers to attach directly onto your network.

All SCSI drive units allow easy daisy-chaining of CD towers.
UNIX., NT, NetWare, Windows, DOS - all CD types supported. Ideal for archiving solutions or frequently changed CD libraries. Direct network attachment frees up servers or workstations. No software or client system required.

Magneto Optical - LIM-DOW, Write-Once, Write Many
Still one of the most popular backup & archiving medium around. MO technology allows simple copying and backup on any system. Write-once technology is a vital ingredient for archiving of legal, contractual, and non-reversible data.

LIM-DOW allows quick simultaneous erase and write actions in one sweep.

MO libraries can be the ideal solution for high capacity archiving and HSM solutions.

Universal Serial Bus
The Universal Serial Bus offers flexibility, higher throughput than conventional parallel or serial ports, and is universally compatible. No separate operating system versions. Simple plug 'n play without a reboot.

Popular peripherals available with USB connections are CD-Recorders, CD-Rewriters, Hard Drives, Jaz & Zip Drives, Floppy Drives, and numerous storage systems, keyboards, mice, scanners etc.

IEEE 1394 - FireWire Systems
IEEE1394 is the latest I/O serial interface, combining high performance with ultimate ease-of-use. Originally developed by Apple under the name FireWire®, IEEE1394 is now becoming established as an industry standard. It is a fully all-digital multimedia link meaning users do not experience the quality loss associated with analogue-to-digital conversion.

1394 offers interoperability with most digital audio & video devices and flexible, plug-and-play implementation.
