Ultrium : Next Generation Tape Technology

The Ultrium format is an implementation of the Linear Tape Open (LTO) technology. LTO is open tape technoloy that has been standardised by three main manufacturer vendors - HP, IBM, and Seagate. The objective is to devise a new standard of tape system specficially designed to meet current and future mid-range tape backup demands. It is an open standard whose intellectual property can be licensed.

The Ultrium format is a unique initiative of Hewlett-Packard, IBM and Seagate (Seagate Removable Storage Solutions is now known as Certance). These three companies set out to develop a new generation of storage products to meet the evolving needs of the market. The goal was to establish new open-format specifications for high-capacity, high-performance tape storage products for use in enterprise and mid-range server environments.

The Ultrium format is based on the best-of-available tape technologies, optimised to meet the capacity, performance and reliability needs of the enterprise environment. The Ultrium format roadmap has defined four successive generations, doubling performance and capacity with every generation, leading to a 1.6 TB single-cartridge capacity within the next decade. The Ultrium format now has unparalleled endorsement in the tape storage industry and is backed by an unprecedented number of hardware and media licensees.
