DVD-RAM Drives

Maxoptix DVD jukeboxes are available in a range of sizes to suit most environments with both 5.25GB and 9.4GB drives as options. With these Maxoptix jukeboxes, you have total flexibility with 2 drive type DVD-RAM libraries: The DVD520 and DVD540 use 5.2GB double-sided (2.6GB per side) DVD-RAM cartridges. This gives the 20-cartridge DVD520 a capacity of 104GB and the 40-cartridge DVD540 a capacity of 208GB.
The jukeboxes feature a flipping mechanism to take advantage of the storage capacity on both sides of the discs, and are available with one or two drives. The DVD620, DVD640, DVD6436, DVD6911 and DVD61840 use new 9.4GB drives. Enabling capacities in the units of 188GB to 17.296TB depending on the drive/slot configuration. The compact libraries fit under a desk and are compatible with Apple Power Mac, Windows NT4.0/2000, Solaris and UNIX environments, with management software available from independent software vendors. Connectivity is via SCSI interface.

Media
The jukeboxes use standard cartridges that are approved and recommended by DVD Forum. Media cost is also a concern with libraries. Maxoptix jukeboxes use standard double-sided cartridges, which cost about half as much as the media used by competitive units. This can result in cost savings of several hundred dollars per jukebox.

To isolate DVD-RAM for a moment and ignore alternatives such as recordable CD media, the first step is to understand the variations between DVD standards and clarify the media hype over incompatibilities.
