What
is SDLT?
Super DLT tape technology is the newest incarnation
of the the DLT family. Building on the stable foundations of
DLT, increases in capacity and performance through SDLT raises
the DLT standard to higher levels keeping the technology up
with the huge explosion in data storage requirements of the
todays organisations.
Developed
by the Quantum
Corporation the originators of DLT technology, SDLT is simply
the next stage in DLT technology. Starting with SDLT1 available
now, SDLT technology has a future planned roadmap that spans
over 4 generations up to SDLT4 which has a planned capacity
of over 2TB.
SDLT
builds the capability to increase capacity starting at more
than 200 GB and evolving to more than 2 TB on a single cartridge.
State of the art Advanced Metal Powder (AMP) Media enables the
highest data density, offering dramatically increased media
capacity along with easier use and lowered cost of ownership.
AMP media uses durable metal powder technology for recording
very high densities of data, and the reverse of the AMP media
receives a specially formulated coating to accept the optical
servo tracks. By implementing an optical servo on the unused
non-magnetic side, the entire data-bearing side of the media
can be reserved for recording data. In addition, the need for
magnetic pre-formatting is eliminated.
Until
now, increases in magnetic tape performance and capacity have
been the result of increasing the tape area for recording, creating
more tracks, or increasing recording densities. Super DLTtape’s
LGMR technology has made it possible to do all three.
SDLT
has provided a new combination of four major enabling technologies:
- Pivoting
Optical Servo (POS)
- Magneto-Resistive
Cluster Heads (MRC)
- High-efficiency
PRML Channel
- Advanced
Metal Powder Media
Alongside
these technologies, a design breakthrough that moves servo track
information to the unused reverse of the media lies behind the
huge increase in Super DLTtape’s recording area, number of tracks
and track densities. Unlike magnetic servo tape products based
on old technology, Super DLTtape technology uses fully 100 percent
of the data-bearing side of the media for data recording. And
all of this is achieved without affecting Super DLTtape’s backward
compatibility.
Transfer
Rates & Capacity
Transfer rates start at above 20 MB/sec and
will evolve to over 160 MB/sec. As always, these transfer rates
assume a compresion ratio of 2:1. Native capacity for SDLT1
is 100GB.
