MO
is probably one of the safest removable technologies available,
and offers the best data integrity among all removable technologies.
Combined with the high storage capacities and the versatility
of simple removable cartridge systems, MO is the indisputable
king of the removable storage market with manufacturers such
as Hewlett Packard, Fujitsu, and Sony, all actively researching
new technologies and ways in which to increase both capacity
and reliability.
Magento-Optical
Drives
Range of optical drive as some of the fastest MO-drives of the
market. They offer great on-line capacity at the lowest cost
per MB. In comparison with the nightmare of tape systems, there
are presently relatively few differing MO drives available with
varying capacities.
To
enable large-scale storage solutions utilising MO technology,
MO jukeboxes can be used. These can have single or multiple
heads.
We
have used this type of MO jukebox storage for HSM solutions
whereby the optical jukebox is utilised as tertiary storage
(primary storage -migrated to- secondary storage -migrated
to- tertiary storage. An additional advantage of MO is the
capability to introduce WORM (Write Once Read Many) to meet
compliance standards in industries that require a strict audit
trail.
Theoretically,
magneto-optical media also has a longer life or shelf time than
conventional DVD/CD media, making it far more suitable for archiving
solutions. Only time (real time not lab time) will see if this
is true.
