Genuine
Data Throughput . . . and the Misconceptions
The objectives of RAID
and EDAP
systems are data security, protection, and availability. The original
Berkley Papers
of 1987 only specified five levels of RAID: 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5. The
focus of this research was redundancy not performance. The fact
that under certain conditions RAID systems offer faster performance
than single drive systems is a bonus not the primary objective.
Anyone seeking performance-only benefits should utilise RAID
0 (zero), striping without parity
- although this reduces protection of data over a single drive system,
it offers the fastest performance of any drive array or disk system
possible. As the access times, speed, and technology of individual
disks grow, the performance advantage of RAID 0 grows with it as
it is the combination of all these factors multiplied.
