RAID: Redundant Array of Inexpensive (or Independent) Disks

The RAID Advisory Board (RAB) sets out the specifications for RAID as follows:

"A storage system with RAID capability can protect its data and provide on-line, immediate access to its data, despite a single (some RAID storage systems can withstand two concurrent disk failures) disk failure. RAID capability also provides for the on-line reconstruction of the contents of a failed disk to a replacement disk - if one disk fails the system can automatically rebuild the lost data on a new drive with no user interference."

The objectives of RAID and EDAP are to offer data redundancy, regeneration, and reconstruction of data after hardware failure.
