Three Stages of I/O Processing

Processing a standard I/O request within a RAID system can be broken down into three main stages:

1. Generation
The time required by the operating system to generate an I/O request.

2. Processing
The time required by the RAID controller and the disk drives to process the I/O request.

3. Transference
The time required to transfer the data from the drive storage system to the host.

Each of these three stages has a direct impact on the potential performance of the array or RAID system. Different types of interfaces offer better or worse I/O processing options. The ideal interface is one that offers multi-threaded I/O processing
