Defining
RAID Level 3
RAID
Level 3 adds redundant information to a striped array with parallel
access, permitting regeneration and reconstruction in the event
of a disk failure. The redundant information (the parity data) is
normally stored on one or more disks dedicated to data redundancy.
RAID Level 3 provides for high transfer rates and high reliability
and availability, at an inherently lower cost than RAID Levels which
incorporate mirroring.
RAID 3 has a low ratio of ECC (parity) disks to data disks giving
a high efficiency rate. The control design is of a medium complexity
but is extremely difficult and resource intensive to do as a software
based solution.
