Duplexing
is the concept of using RAID Level 1 - an array consisting of
simple mirrored drives - but with the additional configuration
of ensuring each drive is physically attached to the host system
via a separate bus. In normal practice this would be achieved
by placing the two drives to be mirrored on separate SCSI controllers.
This variation on RAID Level 1 protection not only guards against
drive failure, but also against the physical I/O bus failure as
well - such as SCSI controller fault for example. Duplexing therefore
offers additional safety over simple mirroring, but carries an
even higher implementation cost making it the highest cost per
megabyte of any RAID configuration.
